Mongolia - Naadam 2012 - Program
Naadam festival, (11-13 July 2012), is the happiest time in Mongolia. It is also the peak of the tourist season. In Mongolian Naadam is known as "eriin gurvan naadam" (эрийн гурван наадам), meaning - the 3 games of men. The 3 games are horse racing, archery and Mongolian wrestling. Some call it the Nomadic Olympic Games. These games have existed for centuries and incorporate warrior skills.
The festival is performed throughout the country. The central ceremonies and competitions are held in Ulaanbaatar.
This year (2012) in UB there will be 512 wrestlers competing in 10 rounds, 420 of them hold a state title. Horses in six age categories will be dashing across the Khui Doloon Khudag fields.
All national events take place in the city, except horse racing, in the Khui Doloon Khudag race fields (west of Ulaanbaatar on the main road leading to Lun see map)
Cost $25
Tourists can buy tickets for the opening ceremony at the Ulan Bator stadium for USD25 from the Metropolitan Tourism Department or from hotels and tour operators. Tickets will become available for tour operators only after July 2nd.

Countryside Naadam Events
Naadam events will take place in all aimags (provinces). Each aimag decides on the festival dates. These local events are aimed for the local communities. The dates might change, so ask before heading there. What to expect
Tourists are welcome to join, but there are limited facilities. Almost no English is spoken, there are no road signs and for the exact location of the Naadam celebration fields, your driver will have to ask around.
Gobi Naadam
Naadam at Mandalgovi this year (28-29 July) will be relatively large. Mandalgovi is a small desert town, half way between UB and the popular tourist destinations in the Gobi. The Naadam takes place about 1km south of the town in an open space. A few shade tents are set up, a few flags, the jeeps line up around, and you have a Naadam.

We're arriving in UB on July 13 in the morning? Are there still Nadaam activities going on this day?
best,
anne
Hi Anne
Yes there will be activities on the 13th.
I will publish them by next week, when the plans are finalized.
There will be mini Naadams celebrated in various locations, including in Terelj park near Ulaanbaatar.
If you can plan to be in Mongolia up to 28-29 July, I would recommend you go to Mandalgov half way between Ulaanbaatar and the Gobi. They will celebrate a large countryside Naadam.
Dan
Hi Dan,
Is there somewhere I can find the soum Naadam schedule for Tov? I'd like to stay a little closer to UB if possible. I've been looking around and you're the only person I've found with a Naadam schedule in English. Thanks so much for posting this!!
Cheers!
Taylor
Hi Taylor
I have added a link at the top of this page to all sum (district) Naadam celebrations in Khentii aimag (north eastern province).
When more information becomes available I will publish here too.
Enjoy Naadam.
Dan
Do you know if there's a shuttle that takes spectators to the horse racing track? Or would recommend hiring a taxi/taking the bus? Thanks.
Hi
There will be plenty of transportation options to the horse racing fields.
Ask at your hotel.
Be aware that only vehicles with special permits will be allowed beyond the checkpoint.
The permits will be delivered this week.
Dan
Hi Dan
I plan to cross the border overland at Erenhot on 26 Jul. Then I plan to make my way upto Mandolgovi for the Naadam there by 28 Jul. What do you think is the best way to make my way from Zamyn Uud to Madalgovi...?
Thanks
Jay
Hi Jay.
Definitely through Ulan Bator. That is how transportation in Mongolia works.
Any transport line from point A to point B goes through UB.
On the map or from the eagles point of view it seems there is a much shorter and direct way.
Dan
OK - thanks Dan.
Where exactly is the Mandaolgovi Naadam and what's it like? You said its a bigger one as a few Sums combine and do this one... sounds interested, but is it in stadium or out in the open and something I can get involved in? Just trying to figure out if I should really go there or not and what to expect.
Cheers!
Jay
Hi Jay
I have added above 2 photos and description of the Mandalgovi Naadam.
It takes place about 1km south of town in an open space.
Ask at your hotel to check before going there, dates might change.
Dan

Thank!
